OUGD405 End of Module Evaluation

1) What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Throughout this module, my research skills have definitely improved and developed the most and through spending a significant amount of time collecting and analysing large quantities of information, I have found that the design process is more straightforward and the overall communication of my ideas are well informed because of this. This has made me realise how research is the most important part of the process and from good research, stems good ideas.

The '100 Things' brief in this module was the longest brief we have been set so far on this course, and being a five week brief I have found time management a challenge. However, the process has certainly helped me organise my time better generally and I have been sure to work consistently and plan my time appropriately in order to produce a larger quantity of work over a longer period of time.

The 'How To' brief helped to develop my team working skills as well as working under pressure to a tight deadline. When working on group briefs, I have learnt that it is important to voice as many ideas as possible and not remain in the background in order to function effectively as a team. Moreover, when working with others, compromising is intrinsic in maintaining a balance amongst the group and preventing fall outs and arguments, because, at the end of the day, not everyone is going to agree on the same ideas/designs/fonts etc. but when working to a deadline, time is of the essence and debating over petty things with each other ends up wasting time. 

2) What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

The postcard brief forced me into tackling Photoshop properly for the first time which I found particularly challenging (and quite confusing at times) however, after learning some basic techniques using the software, I became quite engaged with experimenting and making alterations  to my final five photographs. 
Thorough and detailed research have informed my designs and ideas during this module and especially in the '100 Things' brief where as my designs have developed, I have had to research further into particular aspects in more detail to ensure that the information I am communicating is accurate, interesting and engaging.
With my 10 final products, I was keen to produce some non-digital final outcomes as well as digital and found it refreshing to produce pattern print pillowcases using an iron-on transfer which, was particularly relevant to my theme of dreams and added variation to the final 10 pieces.

3) What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I would say that from this module, I was definitely more experimental with processes and formats for my final outcomes, such as producing posters, photographs, bookmarks, book covers, booklets and stickers (most of these, I had never done before). I found that trying out new things throughout this module, not only kept it interesting and engaging for me but developed my skills as well. This has sparked a further interest and yearning to start experimenting with other processes such as screen printing, letter press and book binding which I'm looking forward to trying out also.

I have also found over the module that I have improved significantly on Adobe Illustrator, by using it consistently for my designs and also getting shown tips and tricks from my peers along the way which has helped me learn technique such as including texture, playing around with gradients and creating patterns.

4) What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

With the five week brief, I found it especially difficult to maintain a constant work flow, but this was mainly due to the fact that we all had a lot of other work from other modules to do alongside the 405 briefs, and so for a while, the '100 Things' brief got pushed to one side. This then led to a large amount of catch up work to do in the last two weeks before the deadline which I found stressful and challenging. In the future, I need to divide up my time better and be more organised so that I don't end up leaving everything to the last minute.

Another aspect of this module that wasn't so strong was keeping my blog regularly updated. Whilst I had screenshots of my design development as I went along, the actual blogging stage was left towards the end due to the fact that I had print slots booked and so my final designs had to be done early to allow for any corrections.

In the future, I will also make sure that I produce more design sheets and try out as many different ideas as possible in order to make the best informed decisions. This will also mean that I will ultimately spend less time on Illustrator playing around with layout, format etc. 

5) Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these

Next time I will...

1. spend more time sketching out ideas on design sheets to help inform my final ideas before working digitally. this will ensure that I have the best possible outcome having tested out all the possibilities beforehand

2. organise my time better so that I'm not ridiculously stressed out towards the end of the module

3. keep my blog regularly updated as I go along with design sheets, research and development so that I can keep on track with where I'm at on particular briefs and so I don't have to go back and blog right at the end

4. make decisions quicker when it comes to designs so that I don't waste time and also so that I have time to book print slots where necessary and inductions (such as screen print which I ran out of time to do for this module)

5. not submit my work five minutes before the deadline...
