Type & Grid

Choose a magazine article with 3 or more images and several type sizes/styles. Work out the grid and draw it carefully over the page. ‘Mark-up’ on the actual page (or copy) as though it was being specified. Measure the layout and ’line in’ margins & gutters and specify the ‘measures, text sizes & styles, leading & hierarchy.

Once you have identified and specified/de-constructed all the elements, design new and different layouts using ‘thumbnail’ design sheets. Vary the crop or scale of the images and position, size, font and hierarchy of the type. Look at other article examples to give yourself some ideas.
